Nexus Rankings Explained

What it is

Highlander is a unique CCG. It has two ways to win: either by reducing your opponent's Ability down to zero or by taking your opponent's Head. The ranking system we made reflects the game and the deck building skill it takes to make decks that consistently take heads. Winning games by Head Shot is the quickest way to rise thru the ranks. Losing your head will affect your Nexus Score more than just losing a game. The system also slightly rewards games played more than games lost as we want to encourage players to play the game at the end of the day.

What it isn't 

This is not an ELO ranking system. While we considered using a more standard ELO ranking method, we ultimately found that there were enough cons to come up with an alternative approach.

These are the 3 key reasons we decided against ELO:

  • Sensitivity to variance:

    A single win or loss against a similarly rated opponent can significantly change a player's Elo rating, creating a volatile experience, especially for newer players. 

  • "Elo Hell":

    Players stuck in a mid-range Elo bracket can struggle to climb due to the system's tendency to match them with opponents of similar ratings, even if their skill level might be higher than their current Elo. 

  • Limited accuracy at large rating gaps:

    The Elo formula assumes a predictable outcome based on rating difference, which can be inaccurate when facing significantly higher or lower rated opponents.
